Georgia football defensive tackle Elijah Griffin was speaking figuratively about the challenge that awaits in the No. 2 Bulldogs’ showdown against No. 7 Alabama but it was fitting for a game week that’s turned into much more than just a battle of unbeatens.

“We’re super excited,” he said. “We don’t back down from any challenges. We run to the storm. We don’t run away from it. We’re definitely 100 percent ready in my opinion.”

The matchup itself between teams that played for the SEC championship last December in Atlanta and look very much like College Football Playoff contenders is compelling enough.

Georgia has the second best odds (+550) to win the national title and Alabama is tied for sixth (+1100) by BetMGM.

The teams’ preparations came with the forecast of a tropical storm expected to turn into a hurricane that could impact conditions for Saturday’s game if not when the game will be played.

Bad weather could make things messy for the nation’s two highest scoring offenses.

Georgia is averaging 51.4 points per game and Alabama 49.6.

“They've got an extremely physical football team,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “They're playing really high-level football right now. …Really hard to defend because you don't feel like there's a play they don't have. They've got all of them, in terms of plays you have to stop."

Georgia vs. Alabama predictions

Georgia-Alabama has produced many high-stakes games in Smart’s time at Georgia including for the national championship in 2017 (won by Alabama) and 2021 (won by Georgia).

Now Alabama seems to be hitting its stride in Kalen DeBoer’s third season.

The Crimson Tide were picked to finish sixth in the SEC in the preseason, but are clicking with first-year starting quarterback Keelon Russell.

“Quarterback is playing amazing for them,” Smart said. “Guy is really talented, fun to watch, and you've seen the growth just from the first game all the way through. The talent this guy has is pretty incredible, and they have great scheme around him.”

Alabama followed a 50-36 home win against Florida State by taking it to South Carolina 49-18 and drilling then No. 16 Mississippi State 56-23 last Saturday in Starkville.

Now the Crimson Tide go up against a Georgia team it beat in Athens 24-21 last season but lost 28-7 in the SEC title game.

“They are going to be our toughest challenge by far up to this point,” DeBoer said. “Coach Smart….this season, just doing an amazing job from just jumping on top of teams and you know see him get after people in the first half and just stay in the course and sustain it all all game long.”

Georgia vs. Alabama scouting report

Why Georgia has an advantage: Gunner Stockton is third in the nation in passing efficiency and 4-0 in true road games in his career as a starter. Only a September, 2025 overtime win at Tennessee came against a ranked opponent, but Stockton has completed 68.2% of his passes with 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in those road games for 932 yards.

Why Alabama has an advantage: Georgia gave up 208 passing yards to Vanderbilt's backup quarterback last week. Now it has to keep Russell and Alabama's pass catchers from making big plays. Russell has 10 touchdown passes and 0 interceptions the last three games when he's averaged 323 passing yards per game.

Georgia vs. Alabama injury updates

Georgia: Wide receiver Isiah Canion (leg, questionable), running back Chauncey Bowens (undisclosed, out), wide receiver Thomas Blackshear (shoulder, out), defensive back Tyriq Green (leg, out), offensive lineman Marcus Harrison (undisclosed, out), RB Dante Dowdell (multiple injuries including collarbone, lung and arm, out), outside linebacker Amaris Williams (knee, out).

Alabama: LB Justin Hill (lower extremity, out), TE Josh Ford (arm, questionable, LB Desmond Umeozulu (undisclosed, out), CB Jordan Edmonds (undisclosed, questionable), LB Cayden Jones (undisclosed, out), DB Nick Sherman (undisclosed, out), DL Jeremiah Beaman (undisclosed, out).

Prediction

Georgia 31, Alabama 27: Georgia hasn't faced an offense that can put up points like Alabama, but the Bulldogs have the best defense in this one and that will be the difference. Gunner Stockton is a better quarterback than he was in the two games against the Crimson Tide last season. Alabama has been vulnerable on the back end and Georgia has the players that can make plays downfield.

Georgia vs. Alabama scouting report: What we're watching

Georgiadefensive front: Can the Bulldogs affect Keelon Russell with its pass rush? Georgia is ninth in the SEC at 2.6 sacks per game. Russell has been sacked 11 times in 5 games including 3 times at Mississippi State.

Tight end impact: Georgia's Lawson Luckie, Elyiss Williams, Jaden Reddell and Ethan Barbour have combined for 5 touchdown passes. Alabama's Kaleb Edwards and Marshall Pritchett together have 16 catches for 322 yards and a touchdown.

Georgia secondary: Georgia gave up a season-high 8.3 yards per pass attempt last week to Vanderbilt. Cornerbacks Ellis Robinson, Demello Jones and Braylon Conley will be put to the test against a receiving corps led by Ryan Coleman-Williams (18.9 yards per catch, 4 TDs) and Lotzeir Brooks (16.8 ypc, 1 TD).

Alabama's rushing attack: Georgia stuffed Alabama last year, holding it to minus-3 yards rushing in the SEC championship game. A Georgia defense that is third in the nation against the run (57.4 yards per game) will try to slow down an improved Alabama ground game (186.4 rushing yards) with freshman Trae'shawn Brown, junior Daniel Hill and freshman EJ Crowell. Russell, who has a rushing touchdown in four games, adds to the threat.

Bold predictions for Georgia football vs Alabama

Alabama picks off Gunner Stockton but no pick six: Alabama has turned four interceptions this season into pick six touchdowns. That leads the nation. Alabama will add to its SEC leading 8 interceptions but won't take it to the house.

Nate Frazier will be fed: Nate Frazier returned last week with two second-half carries from his rib injury. Look for Georgia to try to pound the ball with their top running back against an Alabama defense that allows just 2.5 yards per carry, but gave up 216 rushing yards to South Carolina.

Craig Dandridge takes the top of defense: If the weather clears up, the freshman wide receiver is capable of making a big play vertically against an Alabama defense that CFBstats.com has allowing 6 pass plays of 40 or more yards.

Georgia will dip into trick play bag: Bulldogs coaches haven't needed to dig deep into their trick play bag this season in games the Bulldogs have mostly controlled. This might be a game to try something that's been waiting for a tight game to bring out.
