ATLANTA — Things are pretty simple for Georgia football, in terms of the stakes of its SEC Championship showdown with Alabama, when it comes to the College Football Playoff.
Win here at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday Dec. 6, and the Bulldogs get a first-round bye.
“That all comes with it,” quarterback Gunner Stockton said. “At the end of the day we’re playing Alabama in the SEC Championship. That’s all we’re focused on right now. If we do what we got to do, it will all work out for us. That’s kind of what we’re focused on right now.”
The No. 3 Bulldogs and the CFP-ranked No. 9 Crimson Tide are playing for more than a trophy that comes with winning the conference title.
If Alabama loses in lopsided fashion, it may have to worry about whether it gets into the playoff as a three-loss team.
“We’re a 10-2 team in the SEC,” Alabama defensive lineman Tim Keenan said. “We go out and we play hard. Of course, it’s the SEC Championship, it’s a big deal. We’ve already beat this team before. We’re going to go out there and make sure we do the same thing. But we’re going to make sure we handle business on our own end and not leave it up to the committee to make decisions for us.”
Georgia players said they know all about Alabama winning 10 of the last 11 games against the Bulldogs.
Coach Kirby Smart said it’s more about the here and now.
“It’s a chance to win an SEC championship,” he said. “That’s a very rare thing. The history of Georgia, I don’t know what that total number is, 14, 15? I think it’s 15 or something. These opportunities are hard to come by.”
Georgia can win its 16th SEC title. Alabama is aiming for the program’s 31st crown.
