Georgia football's biggest recruiting needs

The Georgia Bulldogs are not recruiting at the clip that many Georgia fans are used to. Right now, Georgia and coach Kirby Smart have 17 commitments in the class of 2027 and the nation’s No. 17 recruiting class.

Georgia has some catching up to do on the recruiting trail. A few more commitments would help raise Georgia’s recruiting ranking. The Bulldogs have the eighth-best average commitment (90.0 at 247Sports), which is a bit better than Georgia’s overall class rating. Still, Georgia expects to finish in the top-five in recruiting and is going to need to add a few more pieces to the class of 2027.

The recruiting game has changed a ton during the name, image and likeness era. Georgia has more competition than ever despite having one of the most advantageous states for recruiting in the country. The Bulldogs place a premium on signing, developing and retaining top talent as opposed to using the transfer portal. However, if Georgia keeps up at its current pace, then we would not be surprised to see the Bulldogs have to use the portal more this winter.

Georgia’s top recruiting needs

1. Defensive back

Georgia has no commitments at defensive back right now. The Bulldogs have historically signed four or five defensive backs per recruiting cycle, so this position stands out as Georgia’s top position of need. Five-star cornerback Donte Wright and four-star cornerback Jerry Outhouse Jr. both decommitted from Georgia.

Georgia’s lack of defensive back commitments is not a good sign for defensive backs coach Donte Wright. Georgia did a good job of recruiting defensive backs in the 2026 cycle, so we’re not expecting the Bulldogs to strikeout.

2. Edge rusher

Georgia has one commitment at edge rusher right now, but it is from three-star Olayiwola Taiwo, who is Georgia’s lowest ranked commitment. Coach Smart and defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann value having a strong pass rush, so we expect Georgia to prioritize edge rushers. Look for Georgia to try to add one of two more edge rushers.

3. Wide receiver

Georgia has a pair of wide receiver commitments right now from four-star Jamir Dean and three-star Taurean Rawlings. Look for the Bulldogs to add at least two or maybe three more wide receivers in the 2027 cycle. Georgia experiences a lot of turnover at wide receiver.
