Georgia QB Gunner Stockton Receives High Ranking Among SEC Foes

The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into the regular season looking to get back on top of college football, and if they are going to do that, there are numerous players on the squad who are going to have to step up.

Football is a unique game though in that while every single piece of the team is critical on any given down, one position disproportionately impacts the outcome of a game based on how well they're doing. A quarterback needs to command an offense, and at times last year, Gunner Stockton did just that.

While he may not be the most physically gifted signal caller in the world, Stockton came through time and time again and in most games was at his best when his team needed him most. That's a trait you can't teach, and now in his second full year as a starter, Stockton should get even better in the fourth quarter.

Largely because of this, he cracked the top-three on the SEC quarterback rankings recently from Chris Low of On3.

Stockton Ranked Behind Only Two SEC Quarterbacks

"Few players in college football are more underrated than Gunner Stockton," Low wrote. "Just don’t tell the coaches and players who’ve gone against him that he’s underrated. They will tell you his toughness, penchant for making clutch plays and leadership are all right there at the top of the players they’ve faced."

Coming in behind only Trinidad Chambliss and Arch Manning, Stockton is in some elite company with more great quarterbacks in the conference than there has been in some time now.

Chambliss and Manning are both superstars, and Stockton comes in ahead of some very accomplished guys like John Mateer, Sam Leavitt, LaNorris Seller and Marcel Reed.

Though Stockton did not put up Heisman numbers in 2025, the stats were pretty impressive. He tossed for 2,894 yards with 24 touchdowns and just five interceptions over 14 games, also adding another near 500 yards on the ground and another 10 scores.

The threat with his legs is real and something defenses have to prepare for, but it's his instincts, leadership and football IQ that set him apart especially late in games. Georgia is going to be leaning on Stockton a whole lot more this season after losing a significant chunk of its wide receiver core, so the continuity of having him back in the fold cannot be understated.

Stockton is good enough to take this team to a national title if he can play his game and continue to be at his best in the fourth quarter of big games. If he can do that, the sky could be the limit for this team in 2026.
