Georgia safety planning to sue NCAA for fifth season of eligibility

A former Georgia bulldogs safety is seeking one more season of eligibility. According to Pete Nakos of On3, safety JaCorey Thomas plans to file a lawsuit for a fifth season of eligibility so he can return to college and enter the transfer portal.

Thomas joins a long list of athletes from the class of 2022 who have filed lawsuits for a fifth season of eligibility. A temporary restraining order ruled that any athlete from the class of 2022 can earn another season of eligibility if the player wasn't drafted, didn't sign a professional contract, and didn't redshirt.

Thomas never redshirted, playing six games during his freshman season in 2022. He's also never signed an NFL contract, only accepting an invitation to a Carolina Panthers rookie camp.

The Georgia Bulldogs won the national championship in Thomas' freshman season, although he only had two tackles in 2022. Thomas wasn't much involved in 2023 and 2024, racking up 16 tackles and two passes defended in his sophomore and junior seasons.

However, he finally got the chance to start in 2025 and he made the most of it. He racked up 45 tackles, a tackle for loss, and a sack. His lone sack and tackle for loss came against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC championship. Unfortunately, he was controversially ejected for targeting in the Sugar Bowl, which was the final game of his college career. That could change if Thomas is granted eligibility.
