Georgia Sugar Bowl practice observations, and what we saw from the field

Georgia football is finishing up on-campus Sugar Bowl preparations before heading to New Orleans.

The Bulldogs were on the practice field Saturday afternoon Dec. 27 with temperatures an unseasonably warm 76 degrees. Georgia will fly to Louisiana on Monday afternoon and go up against Ole Miss on Thursday in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

The practice session included some CFP-mandated open periods for media viewing, the first time reporters have caught a glimpse of a Georgia practice since the preseason.

Here’s some observations from about 15 minutes of viewing

Wide receiver Colbie Young is practicing

Wide receiver Colbie Young was practicing in a regular red jersey during the individual drills we saw.

Young missed the last six games this season after sustaining a broken leg on Oct. 18 in a 43-35 win against Ole Miss.

Smart said on the day of the CFP selections that the thinking initially was that Young wouldn’t be available to play until the semifinal round if Georgia advanced. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Miami transfer being out there at least is a good sign of him possibly being able to contribute.

Young had 23 catches for 336 yards and a touchdown in seven games this season.

I didn’t notice him going full tilt in drills — he wasn’t active in one agility part — so we’ll see how this plays out. Young did have a play sheet attached to his waist.

No sign of Gabe Harris during viewing period

Defensive end Gabe Harris, who is battling a turf toe injury, was not spotted with the defensive linemen in the indoor practice facility when the defense was going through drills. The offense was on the outside fields at the same time.

Harris, who has started every game, has helped Georgia’s pass rush be more effective during its closing stretch of the regular season.

Updating Dontrell Glover from practice

Offensive line coach Stacy Searels was working his guys on one end of the field.

Dontrell Glover was with the starting unit at his usual right guard spot.

Glover and running back Bo Walker (who was also practicing) were arrested on misdemeanor theft by shoplifting charges earlier this month at a local Walmart.

Smart has not announced any game suspensions for either.

Other injury updates for Georgia Bulldogs

Center Drew Bobo, who missed the SEC Championship game with a foot injury, wasn’t spotted.

Neither was safety Kyron Jones, a starter who has been out since sustaining a foot injury in the sixth game of the season.

Nickel back Joenel Aguero, who missed the SEC Championship game due to a wrist injury, was practicing in a regular jersey. He made a tackle on a player into a mat during one drill.

Freshman tight end Ethan Barbour, who has been out since the season opener with a left ankle injury, is practicing in a regular jersey.

Kirby Smart on the mic

As usual, Smart’s voice on his mic could be heard loud and clear on the outside of the practice fields before the media were let into the facility.

He was keeping tabs on more than just what his players were doing.

“It’s 15 minutes with two minutes left,” in the period he said signaling to reporters and probably support staffers that he wanted the place cleared right then.
