Georgia vs Alabama Prediction: Who Will Weather the Storm?

It takes something truly special for an SEC game of the magnitude of Georgia vs Alabama to not be the story, but even a monster college football showdown like this takes a back seat to a tropical storm. So, depending on the whims of Hurricane Isaias, everything about what might be the biggest game of the regular season is, forgive the unfortunate choice of words here, fluid.

There’s a chance this gets moved earlier, or to Sunday, or to whatever is needed to get this game played. There’s a shot this is played in a freakish downpour with gajillion mile per hour winds, or it might be a delightful 75 and clear during the break in the expected weather.

All that, and throw in the potential of the President showing up, making a growing logistical nightmare for fans attending the game even more complicated.

Oh yeah … the game.

The winner of this can legitimately stake a claim to being the No. 1 team in the country. Georgia has destroyed everyone so far with methodical ease. It blew out Oklahoma 41-13 without much of an issue, and yawned through a 38-14 win over Vanderbilt last week, but the schedule hasn’t been anything amazing.

Alabama, on the other hand, had to go to Kentucky – a far better win now than it appeared at the time – and rolled 45-17, hung 50 on Florida State, 49 on South Carolina, and last week, it showed why it’s Alabama and Mississippi State isn’t with a 56-23 domination.

Of course, this might be the first of three matchups between the two – they could play in the SEC Championship again for the fourth time in six years, and in the College Football Playoff – but no matter how this plays out, this is the one that sets the tone.

Why Georgia Will Win

Georgia should be able to handle the weather, and more importantly, the wind, a bit better.

Alabama can do everything right, but so far this season, it has gone from good to amazing on momentum. Once it hits a big play and starts to have a little success, everything steamrolls from there.

The Tide get the first half out of the way, go into the locker room, and then come out and roll, beating teams 108-32 in the second half so far. Georgia is too mature and tough to let that happen, and if the weather is anywhere close to as bad as expected, the Bulldog offense can grind better than Bama’s.

Why Alabama Will Win

This isn’t the Alabama team of the first two seasons under Kalen DeBoer.

This one is far tougher on the offensive front. No, it might not be able to bash like Georgia can, but it’s physical, and it’ll be just fine going on a few good drives to play the field position game.

The biggest strength, though, is a nasty secondary that takes the ball away in bunches. The Tide have come up with eight interceptions in the first five games.

Georgia’s Gunner Stockton doesn’t put the ball in harm’s way, but he won’t be able to hit the big plays on this bunch – the weather should have something to do with that – like he has throughout the first part of the season.

Georgia vs Alabama Prediction, Betting Lines

This all might be changed a few different times before kickoff, depending on all of the various factors. But for now, assuming the weather isn’t great but not a total dealbreaker, Georgia will be a bit sturdier.

Alabama is far better in the time of possession battle, but it needs the big plays to get things moving, and it won’t get enough of them.

This will be a grind – forget about the kicking game in the expected 20+ mph winds. Georgia’s ability on third downs and its stronger running game will be enough to get through the weather.
