The Oklahoma Sooners have long been considered the premier quarterback-producing programs in college football.
Players like Josh Heupel, Jason White, Sam Bradford, Landry Jones, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts have all led Oklahoma's offense in the modern era. Four of those players have taken home the prestigious Heisman Trophy, while two others have finished second for the award.
But if you were starting your program today and could choose any quarterback in Oklahoma history, who would it be?
Former All-American Gerald McCoy recently offered his answer, and it was not Mayfield, Murray or Bradford. Instead, he chose a quarterback who ultimately left the program through the transfer portal.
"Caleb (Williams)," McCoy told Kyle Odegard for RotoGrinders. "I don't even have to think about it. There are some things missing with Baker athletically. Kyler is a little smaller. Jalen really doesn't throw the ball that well, though he knows how to win. Caleb isn't missing anything. If I'm picking one guy to put in any system with any coach, I'm taking Caleb."
Williams' lone season in Norman showcased why he remains one of the most polarizing talents in recent program history. He threw for 1,912 yards with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions, while rushing for 442 yards and six scores.
One of his defining moments came against the Texas Longhorns, when Oklahoma trailed 28-7 before Williams led a comeback in a 55-48 victory. Williams ultimately transferred to the USC Trojans after the season, following Lincoln Riley, where he went on to win a Heisman Trophy and become the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
McCoy's evaluation highlights the talent Williams brought to Norman, even if his departure remains a sore point for many Oklahoma fans.
