‘Gonna have to pay’: Texas A&M quarterback does not hold back ahead of facing Arch Manning

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning entered last season with what was proven to be a completely unreasonable amount of hype.
“I was kind of disappointed in a lot of, just a lot of people,” Manning’s grandfather, Archie Manning, said, about the standard that was established for his grandson. “The whole thing. They kind of crowned Arch before he ever played. And I just didn’t think that was fair.
That said, although the season didn’t go quite as planned for Arch, the young quarterback responded well after a slow start to the season and improved as the campaign went on.
“Yeah, it was a little tough start, played a great team, and anyway. But I’ve never been more proud of anybody in my life with the way Arch battled through what he had to go through last year, and the way he played, you know, the last eight or nine games of the season,” Archie said.
“We don’t like Texas.”
One of the games that Arch displayed his growth in was Texas’ shocking upset victory over their bitter rivals, the Texas A&M Aggies, who entered the game undefeated. It turns out the Aggies haven’t forgotten about how things played out.
“We don’t like Texas. I don’t like Texas. It sucks that we’ve lost to them twice. But they’re coming here this year, so they’re gonna have to pay. I’ve got something for them, for sure,” Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed said in an interview with USA Today’s Blake Toppmeyer in April.
“I hate the color orange,” Reed added. “The colors just look so ugly. Everywhere you go (in Austin), you see that color orange. Burnt orange? Who likes burnt orange? Texas, it’s the rival, bro. You gotta hate them.”
One person who believes Reed has what it takes to back up his words is former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban.
“Well, I’m a Mike Elko guy in terms of you know what he’s done at A&M,” Saban said earlier this summer on The Pat McAfee Show. “They had 10 guys drafted. That’s more than they’ve ever had. They’ve got some of the highest-rated recruiting classes, which they’ve never had in the past. Or when they did, they fell apart for whatever reasons, they’ve won more games. They play better defense. He’s one of the best defensive coaches in the country, scheme-wise, I think.
“And I think they’ve reloaded. I think they got some good players coming back. I think Marcel Reed is a really, really good quarterback who puts a lot of pressure on the defense. And I think they did a good job in the portal, and they did a good job of recruiting. I think they’re going to be one of the teams that people need to contend with in the SEC.”
Reed and Manning will face each other on November 27.
