Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck said Tuesday only “a few” spots remained open in Minnesota’s 2027 recruiting class. Hours later, one of those was taken.

Three-star defensive end Cameron Saunders of Valley Christian High School in San Jose, Calif., committed to the U on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound rising senior had offers from California, Utah, UCLA, Arizona State and others.

“We home,” Saunders wrote on X.

Saunders was credited with 64 tackles, 7½ sacks and five fumble recoveries during his junior year, per MaxPreps. He also competes in the 100-meter dash, discus and shot put on the track and field team.

Saunders was part of the first Summer Splash official visit weekend in late May. The Gophers are hosting more official visits this weekend, but space in the class is limited.

Minnesota has a nation-leading 27 total pledges for next season, including two other edge players in Roy Price of Newark, Ohio, and Kelsey Rose from Jackson, Tenn.
