Greg McElroy Predicts Texas Tech's Brendan Sorsby as a 2026 Heisman Dark Horse

Following the Indiana Hoosiers’ national championship game win over the Miami Hurricanes, all FBS teams are in offseason mode. Some have already been busy, including the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Head coach Joey McGuire and his team entered the College Football Playoff as the No. 4 seed and earned a first-round bye. However, the Red Raiders were quickly knocked out, losing to the No. 5 seed Oregon Ducks 23-0 in the Orange Bowl.

Texas Tech has since loaded up in the transfer portal, making 21 additions. That includes former Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby. He is set to take over as the starter, replacing Behren Morton, who is out of eligibility.

ESPN analyst Greg McElroysaid he believes Sorsby could emerge as one of the top players in college football next season.

“This isn’t a replacement, this is an athletic upgrade that fits like a custom-made pair of cowboy boots,” McElroy said. “He’s got the arm to make all the throws, but when the going gets tough, and the yards get tough, he can break you down with his legs. … I think he’s a legitimate dark horse Heisman contender.”

Last year, Sorsby completed 207 of 336 passes for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 155.1 passer rating. He also carried the ball 100 times for 580 yards and nine touchdowns.

He joins the Red Raiders with hopes of elevating an offense that already ranked seventh in points per game (39.4) and 10th in total yards per game (461.4). If Sorsby is going to garner attention as a Heisman Trophy contender, he can’t do it alone.

He’s not the only offensive reinforcement McGuire landed through the portal. Texas Tech brought in four new wide receivers. That includes Jalen Jones (Alabama State Hornets), Donte Lee (Liberty Flames), Kenny Johnson (Pittsburgh Panthers) and Malcolm Simmons (Auburn Tigers).

Sorsby and the Red Raiders are poised to start the 2026 season on a high note, hosting the Abilene Christian Wildcats in Week 1.
