AJ Surace will officially make the first start of his career on Friday night.
On Tuesday, head coach Greg Schiano announced that Surace will start vs. Boston College. Multiple outlets have reported the quarterback change.
Dylan Lonergan started in the season-opening loss on Thursday night against UMass. He was removed in the second half due to injury and Surace finished the game. He went 6-for-9 for 77 yards and a touchdown in relief.
Lonergan finished 16-of-29 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions before being removed in the fourth quarter. He has not practiced all week.
Schiano made the decision to start Lonergan in the opener following a quarterback battle in training camp. The battle began in spring and ran through the summer right up until the opener.
“It wasn’t any one scrimmage or one practice, it was a cumulative body of work from when he arrived in January till now,” Schiano said after naming Lonergan the starter. “And as I said to you, they really made it hard on me, he and AJ [Surace], because they both performed very well in that whole stretch of time.”
Rutgers will take on Boston College on Friday at 7:30pm from Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
