Griffin Wilde’s 1,000-Yard Mark Puts Him in Northwestern History

When Aidan Chiles needs a play, Griffin Wilde has continued to be one of the players Northwestern can count on.

The veteran wide receiver reached another milestone Saturday night in Northwestern’s 41-7 win over Colorado, catching five passes for 85 yards. Each of Wilde’s five targets resulted in a catch, continuing what has been an extremely productive start to his senior season. 

Wilde entered the game just 16 receiving yards shy of 1,000 for his Northwestern career. His 85-yard performance pushed him past the mark in just 15 games with the program, making him the fastest Northwestern player to reach 1,000 receiving yards since D’Wayne Bates did it in 13 games during the 1995-96 season. 

The milestone is another reflection of just how productive Wilde has been since arriving in Evanston.

After transferring to Northwestern, Wilde immediately became one of the Wildcats’ most reliable offensive weapons. In 2025, he started all 13 games and finished with 71 receptions for 880 yards and eight touchdowns, earning third-team All-Big Ten honors. 

He has carried that production into 2026.

Wilde opened the season against South Dakota State with three catches for 104 yards, including a 71-yard reception that helped set the tone for Northwestern’s offense. He followed that performance with another five catches against Colorado, giving him eight receptions for 189 yards through two games.

That consistency has made Wilde an important piece for Chiles as the quarterback continues to develop in Chip Kelly’s offense.

Chiles has plenty of athleticism and has shown an ability to create big plays with his arm and legs, but having an experienced receiver who can consistently get open and make the catch gives the quarterback another level of comfort.

Wilde has also shown that he does not necessarily need a huge number of targets to make an impact. When the ball comes his way, he has been productive.

Through two games, Wilde is averaging 23.6 yards per reception and has caught all eight of his targets. He has also accounted for nearly 200 receiving yards while helping Northwestern build one of the Big Ten’s most productive offenses early in the season.

His impact goes beyond the numbers, though.

As a senior and one of Northwestern’s most experienced receivers, Wilde gives Chiles a veteran target who understands how to find space, adjust to the quarterback and make plays downfield. That relationship could become even more important as Northwestern moves into the tougher portion of its schedule.

The Wildcats have scored 75 points and recorded more than 400 yards of total offense in each of their first two games. Chiles has looked increasingly comfortable in Kelly’s offense, while Wilde has consistently been there to make plays when his number is called.

Now, the Wildcats will find out how that connection holds up against Big Ten competition.

Northwestern travels to Indiana on Friday, Sept. 25, for its first conference game of the season. The Hoosiers will present a different challenge for Chiles and the offense, making Wilde’s experience and reliability even more valuable.

If Chiles continues to develop at the pace he has through the first two weeks, Wilde could remain one of the most important pieces of the offense.

For now, the numbers tell part of the story. Wilde has already surpassed 1,000 receiving yards at Northwestern, but his biggest impact may be the confidence he gives a young offense and quarterback every time he lines up.
