Happy Gump Day, everyone. Alabama basketball is in Nashville tonight to face unbeaten Vanderbilt. Tip-off is at 8pm CT on ESPN2, and we will have you covered on that later.
Most of the current college sports news surrounds the football transfer portal, which many of you are probably tired of talking about. Still, we have the news for you here as it comes in.
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who now serves as Alabama’s Director of Player Development, doesn’t see much reason for alarm when it comes to defectors.
“Go watch the tape and tell me what guys y’all are upset about leaving based off production?” Clinton-Dix wrote. “I’m in the office all day. I’ll wait.”
Clinton-Dix did not address specific players, but responded to fans who named specific players who had reportedly entered the portal.
Responding to a comment about Carter and Keeley and their “good potential,” Clinton-Dix said. “potential this is a production business we have to develop (and) win in this collegiate game we don’t check off a box called potential.”
Responding to a comment about Smith, Clinton-Dix said the fan was “looking at highlights”
“Would be great to have back,” Clinton-Dix said. “But stressing is a no.”
Smith is one that Alabama definitely didn’t want to lose, but I think that the point here is that the production may not have matched the financial expectation, or more specifically the financial offer that Smith’s agent may have gotten elsewhere. Until college football finds a way not to have unfettered player free agency every year, this is just going to be the reality. Imagine what Washington is dealing with right now.
Sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr. announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday despite reportedly signing a contract to remain in Seattle. Now, the university is prepared to retaliate.
Washington “plans to pursue legal avenues” in light of this massive development, per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, and is convinced that another school reached out to Williams after he signed his deal with the Huskies. Officials intend to present evidence of tampering, which would obviously subject the NCAA and the sport as a whole to a deluge of scrutiny.
LSU has been named as a program to watch amid Williams’ Washington defection, which will surely raise eyebrows. Following a dragged-out and much-discussed exit from Ole Miss, these are probably not the optics that new Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin needs right now. It must be noted, however, that the mystery team the Huskies suspect of meddling has not been named at this time.
So, you have a mercenary coach who bailed on his team, that is now in the semifinals without him, tampering with a player who has just signed a new financial package at his current school. To top it all off, Williams posted his transfer announcement while many of his Washington teammates were attending a memorial for Mia Hamant, a popular soccer player at UW who died after a protracted battle with kidney cancer.
I guess shame just isn’t a thing we do anymore.
Speaking of shameful things, Alabama’s playoff exit definitely qualifies. As always though, when Alabama was on, people were watching.
ESPN and industry reporting show the Rose Bowl quarterfinal averaged 23.9 million viewers (peaking at roughly 25.6 million), making it the most-watched CFP game since the playoff expanded to 12 teams and surpassing last season’s national championship between Ohio State and Notre Dame (22.1 million average).
The postgame release also noted that the quarterfinal window averaged 19.3 million viewers across ESPN platforms, representing a year-over-year increase for the round.
The Indiana–Alabama telecast also outdrew more than 18 of the 22 CFP semifinal games from the four-team era.
Alabama is getting high marks for the Smothers signing.
Prized portal signing: Hollywood Smothers, RB, NC State
In need of a playmaker in the backfield, the Crimson Tide went after one of the top ballcarriers available this cycle and got their man in Smothers. The ACC’s top rusher with 85.4 yards per game, Smothers galloped his way to 939 yards and six touchdowns over 11 games with the Wolfpack during the 2025 season and should be the most impactful addition in the Alabama backfield since Jahmyr Gibbs transferred from Georgia Tech ahead of the 2022 campaign. Like Gibbs, Smothers is a dynamo in the open field and has elite skills as a pass-catch threat. Given where Alabama’s run game has been under Kalen DeBoer, upgrades here were much-needed.
Freshman Xavier Griffin is expected to make an immediate contribution at linebacker.
Griffin is versatile, sure. But what’s most important to him is he plays to showcase his love for the game. He plays with energy. When no one is running to the ball, Griffin is running to the ball.
Griffin loves to play linebacker, to be the “quarterback of the defense,” to make the checks and make sure the defense is aligned, to blitz.
It’s a love that turned into production, finishing his senior season at Gainesville High School with 78 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss and four sacks in 12 games.
Last, if you didn’t see the ending of the Auburn basketball game last night, it was hilarious. They blew a 16 point second half lead, at home, to Texas A&M. In fact, they went from up 16 to down 11 in a mere 6:19, allowing the Aggies to score 33 points over that period which would pace nearly 200 for a 40 minute game. In the end, they thought they had a buzzer beater to escape with a one point win, but it was correctly waved off.
On brand, they’re spending all their time and energy crying about the call. Steven Pearl whined to the SEC office. Maybe he’s just trying to deflect from this display of basketball his team put on the floor.
Wonder if Auburn will accept their NIT bid this year?
That’s about it for now. Have a great day.
Roll Tide.
