While there are still conference championship games left to be played to determine the 12-team College Football Playoff, a couple of bowl games for bowl season were announced on Thursday, Dec. 4.

One of those matchups will feature two former Hawaii quarterbacks and teammates ― Timmy Chang and Nick Rolovich ― facing off as coaches when California takes on Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve.

Chang, 44, is in his fourth season as the Rainbow Warriors’ head coach. He has a career 21-29 record coaching the team, but has led the program to its best mark yet since taking over in 2022, sitting at 8-4 during the 2025 season.

Meanwhile, Rolovich, 46, is the Golden Bears’ interim head coach following the firing of Justin Wilcox on Nov. 23. He is 1-0 on the season with a win over SMU last weekend to help Cal finish the season with a 7-5 record. He served as the Hawaii head coach from 2016-19.

The Golden Bears and Rainbow Warriors have played each other five times, with Cal holding a 3-2 series advantage. The Golden Bears earned a 51-31 win over the Rainbow Warriors in their most recent matchup, on Aug. 26, 2016, in Sydney, Australia.

Chang and Rolovich overlapped at Hawaii during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. During the 2001 season, Rolovich passed for 3,361 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, leading the Rainbow Warriors to an 8-1 record.

Following Rolovich’s departure, Chang became the starter in 2002. He finished his Hawaii career with 17,072 passing yards and 117 touchdowns, both of which are school records and were NCAA records at the time.
