Michigan State football head coach Pat Fitzgerald is searching for his offensive coordinator hire to open his tenure in East Lansing. A very secretive process, not much has been leaked in regard to who the hire may be, causing lots of speculation amongst the fanbase.
Spartans Wire identified five potential candidates for the position, and then five more candidates that could fill the role, before identifying Nick Sheridan as someone who is firmly in the mix for the open offensive coordinator position. It now appears that another name could be in the mix.
Chip Kelly is on the market, and is actively looking for his next job calling plays. He is someone that has been indicated as a person to keep an eye on.
Kelly was recently in the news for his candidacy at Georgia Tech, for the Yellow Jackets open OC role. He almost certainly is going to be looking at all available options in the collegiate game, and should be a highly sought after name.
Despite some back and forth success as a head coach in the college and NFL ranks, there is no questioning his success as an offensive coordinator. In 11 seasons as a collegiate play caller, he has led top-20 offenses eight times, only falling outside of the mark three times.
While Sheridan’s candidacy is polarizing due to the fact that he played quarterback at Michigan, Kelly is a whole other form of polarizing. Some would consider him as a home run hire, while others believe that he is not a coach that should be targeted, due to a shaky past.
Either way, he is an experienced offensive mind, that would be thought as a big time hire across the country. This move would signify that Fitzgerald is ready to play in the big leagues, and is making the moves necessary to get there.
As stated with Sheridan, there is no confirmation that Kelly is the lead candidate, or set to be hired, or even has an offer, but it is clear that Kelly is a candidate to keep an eye on as this process gets closer to being finalized.
