Kossuth is rolling at the right time.
The Aggies have won six straight games heading into their second-round matchup in the Class 3A playoffs. Much of their success has come from a strong rushing attack, which averages 258.9 yards per game.
“I do think we found our identity on offense, and being able to use a lot of multiple backs in the offense and receivers and all throughout the season has helped us,” coach Brian Kelly said. “It also allowed us to get back on track and roll off a lot of W's throughout the division and all.”
Eli Tays leads the charge with 112 carries for 1,189 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dawson Weatherbee, Landen Pittman, Trey Arthur and Bo Booker all have at least 260 yards and three scores apiece.
Kelly has wanted to make sure that the Aggies (8-2), who had a lot of new pieces coming into the year, came together as the year has gone on. Kossuth has done that both on and off the field.
“You could tell each and every one of them being locked in and all and holding each other accountable on their job and doing their job and executing on offense,” he said. “It's great leadership with the seniors, and we've had a lot of big sophomores.”
Kossuth’s streak, however, will be tested against arguably its toughest opponent yet.
The Aggies host Choctaw County (6-4), the defending 3A state champion, in Alcorn County tonight. In the eyes of Kelly, there isn’t much the Chargers aren’t good at.
"They're extremely seasoned in the secondary. They’ve got a really good defensive line, probably the most talented defensive line we have seen all year,” Kelly said. “Offensively, they have a lot of weapons.
“Jeremiah Miller in the backfield. He's probably one of the best 3A backs. Their quarterback, (K.J.) Cork coming back, just a phenomenal athlete, the offensive line, it's like they didn't miss a beat from last year.”
Kossuth’s focus on playing clean will be all the more important against the Chargers, whose speed and athleticism will challenge them like no one else has.
“Just taking care of the football and offense,” Kelly said. “Get the chains moving, execute the game plan, run to the ball on defense.”
