The Houston Cougars are back on the practice field as the Coogs get into the swing of things, gearing up for the 2026 season with spring practice now well on its way as Houston looks to build off a 10-3 record in the 2025 season.
Head coach Willie Fritz and his staff are getting the first real and in-depth look at the squad that they constructed over the offseason, as the new faces, both out of the transfer portal and from the 2026 recruiting class, look to blend with the key group of returners for the Coogs.
While setting the foundation for the 2026 season is obviously the main focus of Fritz as the Coogs prepare for their return to the field in the fall, recruiting does not take any time off as the Coogs look to do some work along the recruiting trail.
Houston is in a Good Spot with QB Target
On Tuesday, Rivals' Sam Spiegelman reported that the Cougars are getting the ball rolling with their quarterback target for the 2027 recruiting class, with Spiegelman logging an expert prediction for the Coogs to land three-star quarterback Jerry Meyer.
The three-star prospect ranks as the No. 58 quarterback prospect in the 2027 cycle per 247Sports' Composite Rankings as well as the No. 128 prospect out of the Lone Star State. Overall, Meyer ranks as the No. 966 in the nation in the 2027 class.
Meyer has gained plenty of attention from plenty of teams as the Cougars look to battle several of their Big 12 foes for the three-star quarterback, with the likes of the TCU Horned Frogs, Baylor Bears, and Arizona Wildcats all having offers to Meyer.
The quarterback also has offers from outside of the Big 12 landscape, with the SEC's Arkansas Razorbacks and Mississippi State Bulldogs, along with the Big Ten's Nebraska Cornhuskers and Purdue Boilermakers sending offers.
The product from Waxahachie High School ended his junior season with 2,754 yards with a 63.3 completion percentage, along with 33 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. Meyer had a breakout sophomore season in which he was Texas District 11-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year, tossing for 3,308 yards, 29 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
The Future of Houston's QB Room
The Coogs have started to look at the quarterback room beyond the 2026 season as they head into this upcoming year already locked in under center with quarterback Conner Weigman headed into his second season as the Cougars' starting signal caller.
The outlook of Houston's quarterback room will obviously gravitate around incoming five-star freshman Keisean Henderson, who, as a five-star prospect and as the No. 1-ranked player in the 2026 class by 247Sports, brings plenty of excitement to the Coogs future at the quarterback spot.
However, with the importance of the quarterback position, having plenty of talented options in that room will also be necessary, and the Cougars could potentially find that with Meyer if they are able to continue their momentum in his recruitment.
