There have been some unique helmet designs in college football history. The Houston Cougars' "Gridiron Galaxy" is one of the best ever. Every year, football fans across the country want to see something newsworthy and creative with uniforms. Houston's plan is to dominate the conversation for this year. While Nike's creative team has thousands of designs for Oregon, the Cougars' claim is to space.

The debut of one-of-a-kind, hand-painted helmets are a signature element of Built By Houston. This will evolve every season with a new theme. The 2026 Cougars will wear 10 different helmets during Saturday's game against UCF. According to Houston athletics, the 10 helmets represent each of the eight planets, the Sun and the famous dwarf planet Pluto.

"Each helmet also has a connection to Houston or the University, which ultimately means that each helmet has a connection to the Houston Football team and the uniform."

The helmet collection includes:

45 — Sun

23 — Mercury

19 — Venus

15 — Earth

10 — Mars

8 — Jupiter

5 — Saturn

4 — Uranus

3 — Neptune

1 — Pluto

Only one was created for Pluto because it's the rarest helmet in the collection.

The University of Houston has a deep connection to space exploration. The institution established its Clear Lake campus to support NASA's efforts at Johnson Space Center and the second group of NASA Astronauts, which included Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell and Pete Conrad.

Houston hosts UCF on Saturday at Noon ET.
