How college football coaching carousel affects Pensacola area recruits

The college football coaching carousel is crazy as ever, and the impact is hitting the Pensacola area.

Several area recruits verbally committed to schools that will have a new head coach next season either because they were fired or accepted a job elsewhere. Many of these moves were finalized in recent days, putting recruits in potential binds ahead of National Signing Day on Dec. 3.

That’s the first day players can sign a financial aid agreement with their school of choice, turning a verbal commitment into a nearly ironclad one.

Below is a roundup of Pensacola area players, who had their recruitment affected by coaching changes.

Trenton Henderson, DE, Pine Forest (LSU)

The No. 67 overall player and No. 8 edge rusher in the class of 2026 according to the 247 Sports composite, Henderson verbally committed to LSU on July 2.

The four-star recruit told the PNJ in mid-October he was planning to early enroll in the spring 2026 semester in Baton Rouge.

But LSU fired Brian Kelly on Oct. 26 and hired Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin on Nov. 30. Henderson looks to be in favor of the move, retweeting a video on his X account of Kiffin greeting Tigers athletic director Verge Ausberry after arriving in Baton Rouge on a private plane.

He also tweeted a highlight clip captioned with a soon emoji and two Tigers emojis on Nov. 30.

Henderson transferred from Pensacola Catholic to Pine Forest for his senior season, recording 35 tackles (8 TFL), 4.5 sacks, 1 pass deflection, 1 blocked punt and 1 blocked field goal while helping the Eagles win the District 1-4A title.

Kaiden Hall, S, Milton (Florida)

A four-star recruit and the No. 25 overall safety in the class of 2026 according to the 247 Sports Composite, Hall verbally committed to Florida on June 3.

But Florida fired head coach Billy Napier on Oct. 19 before hiring Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall on Nov. 30.

Hall reacted to Napier’s firing by posting the news with a heartbroken emoji on his Instagram story.

He took official visits to Ole Miss on Nov. 15 and Georgia Tech on Nov. 22.

Hall played quarterback for the first time at the varsity level in his senior season. He completed 58 percent of his passes for 638 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions while running for 798 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He also recorded 25 tackles, three interceptions and two pass deflections on defense and projects to play safety at the next level.

Mason Mathis, OT, Pace (USF)

Mathis committed to the Bulls on June 22, a decision may be in flux now that USF head coach Alex Golesh is now the head coach at Auburn.

“With the current situation of the coaching staff at USF I have to decided to stay committed,” Mathis wrote in a post on his X account on Nov. 30. “However I will re-open my recruitment to ensure the best fit for me.”

Mathis holds 22 offers to play college football, according to 247 Sports. He recorded 68 pancakes blocks this fall for a Pace offensive line that helped the Patriots run for 296.4 yards per game.

Josiah Brown, CB, Booker T. Washington (Memphis)

Like Mathis, Brown is another player who committed to a coach that left for a promotion up the coaching ladder.

Brown’s been committed to the Tigers since June 15, but Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield was announced as the new head coach at Arkansas on Nov. 30.

The three-star recruit currently has five offers, according to 247 Sports. Brown finished his senior season with 65 tackles, 14 pass deflections, an interception and a forced fumble.
