OXFORD — Ole Miss football is in great position to make the College Football Playoff.

The Rebels (10-1, 6-1 SEC) are No. 6 in the rankings, released Nov. 18 on ESPN. If that holds, Ole Miss would make its first College Football Playoff in program history.

The Rebels were No. 7 in the previous CFP poll, but Alabama fell from the No. 4 spot to No. 10 after losing to No. 8 Oklahoma.

The Rebels are on an open week before finishing the regular season in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28. Players are focused on avoiding distractions around coach Lane Kiffin’s future.

Kiffin has been linked to openings at LSU and Florida.

Lane Kiffin to Florida, LSU rumors dominate college football headlines

Kiffin is the center of the college football news cycle.

Kiffin appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Nov. 18 for an interview. He denied reports that he received an ultimatum from Ole Miss about making a decision.

Members of the Kiffin family reportedly visited Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Gainesville, Florida, in the last few days.

The Grove Collective has gotten an increase in support since rumors of Kiffin leaving for LSU or Florida have intensified. Kiffin has remained silent on the matter, other than saying it is a compliment to his players and staff.

How the CFP format has changed in 2025

The CFP format has changed in 2025. The teams ranked in the top four will now earn automatic byes. That’s a change from 2024 when the four byes were reserved for the four highest-ranked conference champions.

The 12-team field will still consist of the five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams.

The first round will be be played at college campuses, with the teams ranked No. 5, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8 hosting the bottom four teams.
