ATLANTA — Georgia football quarterback Gunner Stockton turned the tides on Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Bulldogs‘ 28-7 SEC Championship win over Alabama. Quite literally.
A week prior, on Black Friday, to close out the regular season against Georgia Tech in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the redshirt junior threw for only 70 yards on 11 completions with one touchdown and one interception.
It was arguably his worst outing of the season, with all other outings averaging at least 200 passing yards – except against Alabama the first time, where he only put up 130.
Stockton made up for it with an efficient 156-yard passing performance in the Alabama rematch with zero interceptions and three touchdowns, earning himself the SEC Championship Game MVP title.
“It’s a great feeling just to see him get that,” said senior defensive back Daylen Everette, the 2024 SEC Championship MVP. “I’m proud of him for everything he’s done for us this year. He’s probably one of the toughest kids on the team, toughest kid I know. He takes hits all game and just pops right back up like nothing happened.”
In his first season as Georgia’s starting quarterback, Gunner has completed 251 passes for 2,691 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. He’ll have the chance to add to those numbers in the College Football Playoff.
“He’s just a great leader,” junior linebacker CJ Allen said. “Going back to my freshman year when he wasn’t starting, how he worked head-down, I’m so happy for him. He deserves it. He works so hard.”
