With the NFL and college football firmly in the offseason, there will still be some football being played during the spring and summer, before we get back to the real thing in the fall and winter.
The United Football League returns for another season in 2026, and as one of the longest-running spring football leagues of all-time, there’s optimism that playing well in the UFL can get you a real chance (or a second chance) in the NFL.
The Oklahoma Sooners have a number of players that finished their careers in Norman that are suiting up in the UFL this spring. The league has eight teams, and OU has former players on half of them. The Birmingham Stallions lead the way with five former Sooners on the roster in offensive linemen Andrew Raym and Tyrese Robinson, defensive linemen Amani Bledsoe and Isaiah Coe, and defensive back Tre Norwood.
Elsewhere, wide receiver Drake Stoops suits up for the Dallas Renegades, offensive linemen Adrian Ealy and Michael Tarquin are on the roster for the DC Defenders, and linebacker Dashaun White plays for the Orlando Storm. Though Houston Gamblers running back Marcus Major didn’t finish his career at OU, he did spend five years with the Sooners, before finishing out his college career at Minnesota.
On the coaching side, there are a few UFL names with OU ties. The most prominent is Gamblers head coach Kevin Sumlin, who was an assistant coach for the Sooners for a number of years, and the co-offensive coordinator in Norman in 2006 and 2007. On Sumlin’s staff is running backs coach KC Gundy, who was a student assistant and graduate assistant at OU from 2014 to 2020. Additionally, Louisville Kings head coach Chris Redman had a controversial high school recruitment process with the Sooners in 1995.
The other two UFL teams are the Columbus Aviators and the St. Louis Battlehawks, and the league’s first week of games begins on Friday night.
