New Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald has made bold claims about what to expect during his first season on the job.
“I expect (fans) to see the toughest Michigan State football team that we’ve ever had,” Fitzgerald said, per Connor Eargood of The Detroit News. “I expect us to be competitive and win a Big Ten championship, and we’re not gonna back away from those two expectations.”
Fitzgerald may have high expectations, but the reality is he’s taking over a program that has gone 18-30 the past four seasons. Further, Fitzgerald’s time at Northwestern really fizzled out, going 4-20 his last two years on the job.
Fitzgerald signed a five-year, $30 million deal with Michigan State, and while Fitzgerald may be perceived as an upgrade over prior head coach Jonathan Smith, he hasn’t had much success against Michigan. Fitzgerald was 1-9 against Michigan during his time as Northwestern’s head coach.
In this edition of SB Nation Reacts, predict how many wins Fitzgerald will have versus Michigan during his five-year contract.
Michigan has won the last four games against Michigan State, and the two rivals will square off this season on November 7 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
