Heading into Week 1 of the 2026 college football season, the Clemson Tigers were hoping to make a statement against the LSU Tigers. Dabo Swinney and company wanted to make it clear that they were a team to be reckoned with.
Whether they ended up winning the game or not, Clemson at least wanted to compete and show that it wasn't a pushover team this season.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen. When all was said and done, Swinney's team was blown out by a final score of 51-10. Nothing went well for the Tigers.
Following the blowout loss, Swinney's future with Clemson has been brought up once again. After a brutal 2025 campaign, the hot seat rumors began swirling. Those rumors have reached an all-time high this time around.
Should the Tigers consider the idea of firing Swinney, it wouldn't come cheap. How much would Clemson have to pay Swinney to buy out his contract?
As shared by CBS Sports, the buyout of Swinney's contract would cost the school $57 million. That number feels too big for the Tigers to make a change, but there is a lot more money floating around in college football than there used to be.
"Swinney would be owed a whopping $57 million in buyout money if Clemson moved on from him this season, an absurdly large number that feels too big and yet college football has taught us there's no such thing as too big a buyout number if the frustration gets high enough," CBS Sports shared.
"Could Clemson leaders convince Dabo to retire at the end of the year as a way of saving face and perhaps shave some money off what he's owed on a contract that runs through 2031?"
Simply thinking of a world where Clemson moved on from Swinney feels weird. He has been one of college football's elite head coaches for years and has led the Tigers to a lot of success.
Swinney took over the program back in 2008. He has compiled an impressive 187-55 overall record and has gone 113-29 in ACC play.
At the end of the day, past success doesn't matter in the present. The Clemson football program is headed in the right direction. Swinney's unwillingness to alter his approach in the changing college sports landscape has become a major problem the Tigers might have to deal with.
Expect to continue hearing rumors and speculation about Swinney's future at Clemson. The Tigers will look to rebound in Week 2 against Georgia Southern on September 12.
