How Notre Dame football will remember late coach Lou Holtz

SOUTH BEND—Six months after the death of Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz, Notre Dame football revealed its plan to honor his memory on the field this season.

As shown in a social media post on Wednesday morning, a small round decal with “LOU” in white letters against a black background will be affixed to the back lower right of the famed golden helmet.

An outline of two hands making the “L” symbol flank the late coach’s first name.

Holtz, who died on March 4 at age 89 in Orlando, FL, is buried on the Notre Dame campus along with his wife Beth.

Holtz spent 11 years at the helm of the Irish football program (1986-96), including an undefeated run to the 1988 national championship.

Notre Dame, ranked fifth in the US LBM Coaches Poll, is considered among the favorites to end that nearly four-decade drought in 2026.
