How Oklahoma's John Mateer turned near touchdown to Georgia scoop-and-score

Between the Hedges has been a house of horrors for Oklahoma in the first half against Georgia.

Already down 14-0, it looked like the Sooners might get on the board against the Bulldogs with a bit under 10 minutes left in the second quarter. However, the ball slipped from John Mateer's hand on a play-action bootleg during his windup, which Georgia's Chris Cole scooped up and housed from 86 yards out to make it 21-0 Georgia.

It didn't get better from there, either. On the ensuing drive, Mateer threw an interception over the middle to Georgia safety KJ Bolden, who returned it 28 yards to the Georgia 47-yard line. The Oklahoma defense did its part, forcing a punt, before Mateer had another disastrous takeaway in the ensuing drive.

With Oklahoma facing fourth-and-1 at its own 34-yard line, Mateer fumbled the ball again, with Cole again returning it to the 11-yard line. Georgia made good on the short field to make it 28-0 with less than a minute remaining in the half.

The Oklahoma offense has been anemic this season, but it has reached a tipping point since its loss to Michigan before having to hold on against New Mexico 14-6. Mateer, who was drawing offseason hype as a returning quarterback, was putting together a nice drive before the fumble.

Oklahoma is looking to rediscover some of its offensive identity, but between Mateer's struggles and a nearly nonexistent running game, Georgia is a team it is going to be very hard to make any kind of adjustments against.
