Ducks Must Regroup Quickly as Their Season Reaches a Critical Point

Oregon entered the 2026 college football season with championship expectations, but the Ducks now find themselves searching for answers after a disappointing 17-15 loss to UCLA. The defeat dropped Oregon to 3-2 and knocked the program out of the AP Top 25, putting even more pressure on head coach Dan Lanning and his team to respond.

Despite the frustrating loss, Oregon still has time to turn its season around. The Ducks have talented players, a strong coaching staff and plenty of opportunities remaining on their schedule. However, several things must improve if they hope to get back into the national championship conversation.

Quarterback Situation Must Stabilize

One of Oregon’s biggest challenges has been dealing with injuries at quarterback.

Starting quarterback Dante Moore missed the UCLA game after suffering a concussion against USC. Dylan Raiola started in his place, but Oregon struggled to find consistency offensively before third-string quarterback Brock Thomas entered the game.

Thomas helped spark a late rally, connecting with Evan Stewart for a 44-yard touchdown that brought the Ducks within two points. Oregon then failed to convert a crucial two-point attempt, leaving the team just short of completing the comeback.

Getting Moore healthy will be important, but Oregon must also prepare its backup quarterbacks to handle pressure. A reliable quarterback situation would give the offense a better chance to establish its rhythm and produce consistently.

The Offense Needs to Start Faster

Oregon cannot afford to wait until the fourth quarter to find its offensive identity.

Against UCLA, the Ducks managed only six points through the first three quarters. Although the defense kept the game within reach, the offense struggled to capitalize on its opportunities.

Dan Lanning and the offensive staff need to establish the running game, create easier throws and reduce mistakes. Oregon also needs to do a better job converting scoring opportunities into touchdowns instead of settling for limited production.

Defense Must Keep Oregon Competitive

The defense has shown it can give Oregon opportunities to win, but it cannot be expected to carry the entire team.

Creating turnovers, limiting explosive plays and getting off the field on third down will be essential as the Ducks face more difficult opponents.

A Huge Opportunity Against Nebraska

Oregon’s next matchup against Nebraska on October 17 gives the Ducks an immediate chance to respond.

The Ducks need a complete performance, especially with their quarterback situation still uncertain. A victory would help rebuild confidence and provide momentum before a challenging stretch of Big Ten games.

Oregon’s season is far from over, but the Ducks must respond quickly. If the offense finds consistency, the quarterback situation stabilizes and the defense continues making plays, Oregon can still become a dangerous team as the season progresses.
