How Stanford Stacks Up in the Trenches Against 2026 Schedule

With Stanford looking to take a step forward this season under first-year coach Tavita Pritchard, the Cardinal will be focused on getting better play from its offensive and defensive lines as well as the new transfer Davis Warren at quarterback.
There are pieces in play that could help Stanford reach above the 4-8 record they finished with last season, like a brand new coaching staff littered with NFL experience. On the offensive side, Terry Heffernan will lead the way with a fresh approach to utilizing his weapons.
On the defensive side of the ball, one of the architects of Seattle's legendary Legion of Boom defense, Kris Richard, is now in charge of putting the pieces together for the Cardinal.
At the forefront of the team's success will be the offensive and defensive lines this season, and Phil Steele recently ranked the best lines in college football on each side of the ball.
With Stanford's development being a work in progress, they ended up ranked No. 50 out of 68 on the defensive front and No. 57 out of 69 on the offensive end.
With these rankings in mind, let's take a look at how Stanford compares to each of their 2026 opponents heading into the season.
Week 0
Hawaii O-line: Unranked
Hawaii D-line: Unranked
This should give the Cardinal an opportunity to find a rhythm offensively, while also building up some confidence on the defensive end. With this being the first game of the Pritchard Era, fans in the stands will be ready to rock.
Week 1
Miami O-line: No. 39
Miami D-line: No. 6
While the Miami offensive line could present some opportunities for the Cardinal to exploit, that defensive line will be the second-best that they face all season. With Stanford having issues with the O-line in recent seasons, how they fare here will determine how close this game ends up being.
Week 3
Duke O-line: Unranked
Duke D-line: No. 67
In Stanford's first road game, they'll be facing another less-than-stellar offensive line. If the Cardinal are able to find ways to get to the quarterback and disrupt the Duke offense, they could take the crowd out of the game early. Coming off a bye week, coach Richard will surely have some plans of attack for the Blue Devils.
The Duke defense also allowed 412 points last season, ranking them 16th in the ACC, ahead of just Syracuse. They also ranked second in points scored (484).
Week 4
Georgia Tech O-line: No. 24
Georgia Tech D-line: No. 47
Stanford is back home for this matchup, and while it's not going to be an easy contest by any means, if the Cardinal want to have a chance at sniffing a bowl game this season, they'll need to find a way to get to six wins. With an incredibly tough schedule this year, beating Georgia Tech will be a must.
Week 5
Wake Forest O-line: Unranked
Wake Forest D-line: No. 38
The Demon Deacons went 9-4 last season, but just 4-4 in conference play while ranking 10th in points scored (365) and 7th in points allowed (287). This is a road matchup, but may also need to be a win for Stanford to reach a bowl game.
Week 6
Notre Dame O-line: No. 1
Notre Dame D-line: No. 5
This is easily the toughest matchup for Stanford up front on both sides of the ball. Notre Dame is another program with national championship aspirations, and they have been defeating the Cardinal handily over the past couple of seasons. Last year they won 49-20 on The Farm, while they won 49-7 at home in 2024.
Stanford also allowed 56 points in 2023, so holding Notre Dame to under 49 points for the first time in four seasons would be a good start in this year's matchup.
Week 7
Elon O-line: Unranked
Elon D-line: Unranked
This will be the easiest game on the schedule for the Cardinal.
Week 8
NC State O-line: No. 51
NC State D-line: No. 54
Health at this point in the season will likely determine the outcome of this one. Stanford ranks just ahead of the defensive side (50th) and just behind offensively (57th).
The upshot here for Stanford is that their units on both sides will have had some time to gel by this point in the year, and the coaching staff will have found the right mix of guys on each line that plays the best as a unit. If Stanford can limit the Wolfpack's scoring a touch, then the Cardinal could be looking at an upset.
Week 10
Louisville O-line: No. 35
Louisville D-line: No. 22
The last time Louisville was on The Farm, Stanford pulled off their upset of the season, taking down Louisville 38-35 in a thriller. This time, the game will be played in Kentucky.
Week 12
Virginia Tech O-line: No. 20
Virginia Tech D-line: No. 49
In their lone meeting as ACC foes, Virginia Tech went on the road and defeated Stanford 31-7 in 2024.
Week 13
Cal O-line: Unranked
Cal D-line: No. 53
The Stanford Axe is on The Farm, but if there is one thing that we all know, it's that it doesn't matter how each program's season is going. These matchups are determined by which team wants it more that day.
Week 14
SMU O-line: No. 13
SMU D-line: No. 25
This is another tough one for the Cardinal, with SMU taking them down 40-10 in 2024 and 34-10 in 2025. This is a team that expects to contend this season, which could either help or hurt the Cardinal.
If SMU is out of it, perhaps this last home game for Stanford will provide the right scenario for an upset. If SMU is fighting for a playoff berth, they'll be dialed in, and Stanford will be in trouble.
