The No. 13 Alabama Crimson Tide enter the season outside the top 10 of the Associated Press preseason poll for the first time since 2008 as they host the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Alabama enters the season picked to finish sixth in the Southeastern Conference in the preseason media poll, with sophomore Keelon Russell winning the quarterback competition in summer camp. The Crimson Tide finished 11-4 last season with a blowout loss to eventual national champion Indiana in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. The Tide lost all five starting offensive linemen and brought in transfers Devan Thompkins (USC) and Terrance Green (Oregon) to bolster the defensive front.
Texas Tech transfer Mitch Griffis gets the start at quarterback for East Carolina on Saturday as the Pirates come off a 9-4 season and a win over Pitt in the Military Bowl, though Miami transfer Emory Williams is likely to play as well. A rebuilt offensive line features returning tackle Bryce Weaver, who looks to create space for transfer running backs Ashton Gray (North Texas) and Michael Allen (Marshall).
Saturday’s matchup is just the second between the Crimson Tide and the Pirates and the first since a 23-22 Alabama victory in Birmingham in 1998.
