With the 2025 football season three-quarters of the way complete, we are about to get our first look at the College Football Playoff rankings. Texas A&M, along with Indiana, has been one of the biggest surprises this season, with both teams ranked in the top three across all major polls.
The top four spots are not really up for debate at the moment, with Ohio State, Indiana, A&M, and Alabama consistently holding those positions in most major polls over the past few weeks.
Beyond that, it’s shaping up to be a race to the finish for several other teams caught in a logjam between the No. 5 and No. 10 spots. The SEC will be fascinating to follow, with several high-stakes matchups remaining on the schedule that could drastically reshape the playoff picture by the end of the regular season.
A&M still has No. 19 Missouri on the docket, as well as a South Carolina team that has flirted with playing spoiler multiple times this season. However, the most pivotal game of the year for the Aggies might be the season finale against No. 13 Texas, which has been finding ways to win lately. Texas is currently riding a four-game winning streak, and if they manage to beat Georgia, they’ll be right back in the thick of the playoff conversation.
There’s still a ton of football left to be played, but tonight we get our first glimpse at who the playoff committee selected in their initial round of rankings.

Texas A&M football CFP rankings projection
Texas A&M will come in at the No. 4 spot, earning a first-round bye due to how the seeding works this season. You can see more about how the CFP format will work below.
How does College Football Playoff format work?
The four major conference champions—ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC—are still guaranteed a spot, along with the highest-ranked non-major conference winner in the FBS.
However, those champions will now be seeded by their rankings, and the top four overall-ranked teams will receive first-round byes.
As was the case last year, teams seeded No. 5 through No. 12 will compete in a first-round matchup. Seeds 5 through 8 will host their first-round games on campus.
