Game Preview
West Virginia returns home for a Week 11 matchup against Colorado, coming off their best performance of the year — a 45–35 road win over No. 22 Houston that snapped a five-game losing streak and gave the Mountaineers their first Big 12 victory of the season. It was also their first road win against a ranked opponent since 2018.
Scotty Fox, who earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors for his performance in that win, accounted for three touchdowns and 222 total yards against Houston. He became the first true freshman in program history to score three times in a game and the first to rush for two touchdowns since Fred Wyant in 1952. He’s growing into the job quickly, giving West Virginia stability it lacked early in the season and steadying an offense that’s finally starting to find some rhythm behind an offensive line that played their best football of the season in Houston. The running back duo of Diore Hubbard and Cyncir Bowers will continue to shoulder the load in the injury-depleted backfield, combining for 246 yards in Houston.
Colorado (3–6, 1–5 Big 12) comes to Morgantown in search of a spark after being outscored 105–24 over their last two games, including a 52–17 loss to Arizona. Deion Sanders announced that five-star true freshman Julian Lewis will make his first career start at quarterback, becoming just the sixth true freshman to start at the position for the Buffaloes since 2000. Lewis, who decommitted from USC to sign with Colorado, has completed 11-of-21 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in limited action. Offensively, Colorado leans on wideout Omarion Miller, who leads the team with 28 catches for 521 yards and six touchdowns, and running back Micah Welch, who’s totaled 313 rushing yards on the year.
Defensively, safety Tawfiq Byard leads the team with 63 tackles and ranks among the Big 12’s most active defenders, though he’ll miss the first half due to a targeting penalty against Arizona. Meanwhile, the Buffs’ defense has struggled mightily against the run, giving up 215.8 yards per game — the worst mark in the Big 12 and third-most nationally.
With three games left on the schedule, West Virginia still has a narrow path to bowl eligibility. The Mountaineers would need to win out to finish 6–6 and qualify, an unlikely but not impossible scenario if the offense continues trending upward and the defense replicates their most recent outing.

Series History
This is the third all-time meeting between West Virginia and Colorado. The series is tied 1–1, with the Buffaloes winning 17–14 in overtime in Boulder in 2008 and WVU taking the 2009 rematch 35–24 in Morgantown.
Storylines to Watch
This matchup is about momentum — one team searching for it, the other trying to sustain it. For the first time in nearly two months, West Virginia will take the field as the betting favorite. Rich Rodriguez has reminded his team not to get caught up in what Nick Saban once called “rat poison,” staying focused after finally breaking through last week. The Mountaineers’ offensive line has shown life, the running game is finally picking up chunk plays, and Scotty Fox looks increasingly comfortable commanding the offense.
Colorado, on the other hand, is trying to stop the bleeding. Deion Sanders has shuffled his coaching staff and handed true freshman Julian Lewis the keys to an offense that’s been stagnant for weeks. His talent is undeniable — 11,000 yards and 144 touchdowns in high school — but Morgantown in November is a tough place for a debut. The Buffaloes’ biggest weakness remains their run defense, allowing 218 yards per game, and that could play directly into WVU’s hands with Diore Hubbard and Cyncir Bowers operating behind a newly-confident front.
For WVU’s defense, the challenge lies in keeping their hard edge. Fred Perry has emerged as a leader in the secondary, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after racking up 13 tackles and a sack in Houston, and Chase Wilson continues to anchor the linebacker corps. Their ability to stay disciplined and force turnovers could swing momentum early against a young quarterback and a reeling offense.
Saturday will also mark Military Appreciation Day and the celebration of Mountaineer Week, with special recognition planned for Steve Slaton’s College Football Hall of Fame induction and the 2005 Sugar Bowl team’s 20th anniversary.
Prediction
Colorado’s quarterback change adds some intrigue, but it’s hard to trust a struggling defense and a first-time starter in Morgantown. West Virginia’s ground game should be able to dictate the tempo, and if Scotty Fox avoids mistakes, the Mountaineers will have a chance to put together their first winning streak of the season.
