Texas Tech needed a comeback on the road last week to take down Oregon State 35-24 on Saturday. Trailing 24-21, Will Hammond connected with Coy Eakin on a 32-yard scoring pass with 6:31 remaining to give the Red Raiders the lead before they added a late touchdown with 1:03 left to seal the deal. J’Koby Williams finished with 116 yards and a 38-yard touchdown on 20 carries while Hammond went 20-of-27 for 189 yards and the go-ahead score. Eakin caught six balls for 79 yards.
Houston had no such struggles in a 77-6 romp over visiting FCS foe Southern on Saturday night. The Cougars led 70-0 before the Jaguars got on the board late in the third quarter. Starting quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 120 yards and three touchdowns while hitting on 9-of-12 attempts and backup Keisean Henderson threw for two scores. Houston rolled up 388 yards on the ground, with six different players finding the end zone, and Koby Young caught two touchdown passes.
While the Cougars lead the all-time series 18-17-1, the Red Raiders enter with seven straight wins and 12 victories in the last 13 meetings, including a 35-11 triumph at Houston on Oct. 4. The Cougars opened their season with a 33-20 win at home over Oregon State.
Hammond comes in with 487 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception while completing 76.7% of his throws for Texas Tech. Williams has 187 yards and two scores on 33 carries. Weigman completed 69.0% through two games for Houston for 425 yards and four TDs, with Amare Thomas catching 11 passes for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Makhi Hughes leads the ground game with 142 yards and two scores on 25 carries, with the team averaging 308.0 rushing yards per game.
