VITALS: The Wildcats have won the last 17 in the series, dating to 2009. Kansas last won 52-21 in 2008. This is perhaps the Jayhawks' best chance to break the string. Both teams are entering with plenty of struggles. After a 3-0 start during the non-conference portion of the schedule, the Wildcats (3-2 overall, 0-2 in Big 12) are on a two-game losing streak. They lost back-to-back games to the Cincinnati Bearcats and Houston Cougars. The Jayhawks (2-3) have only wins against Long Island University and Middle Tennessee State. Last week they played the Utah Utes tough for three quarters before faltering in the fourth quarter. Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson is in the middle of his third full season as the starter. His top target is receiver Jaron Tibbs, who has 20 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson is the leading rusher with 330 yards and three touchdowns but the running back group has struggled in the last two games. After starting with three straight games of at least 100 yards, Rodney Fields has been shut down in Big 12 play. Safety Logan Bartley leads the defense with 27 tackles but linebacker Gabe Powers has also shined (23 tackles). The Jayhawks feature running back Dylan Edwards, who spent last season playing for the Wildcats. He transferred after losing his starting job in the middle of the season. This marks the third team he has played for. Edwards, who has 318 yards and three touchdowns this season, began his collegiate career with the Colorado Buffaloes. Jayhawks quarterback Isaiah Marshall has played well of late. He has completed 76 of 141 passes for 1,143 yards with eight touchdowns against four interceptions. Nik McMillian is the top receiving target with 18 catches for 345 yards and three scores. Linebacker Trey Lathan leads the defense with 33 tackles. The Wildcats are already playing their fifth home of the season. The schedule becomes less favorable the remainder of the year. Both teams were picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference in the preseason. This is the first year for K-State coach Collin Klein, who was a star quarterback for the Wildcats in the early 2010s. The Jayhawks are led by Lance Leipold, who is in his sixth season. He's only produced one winning season (2023).

QUOTABLE:

K-State coach Collin Klein on the Jayhawks: "I think they've got good length at the skill positions on both sides. I think their secondary has good size, has good length. I think they have a couple really, really good D-linemen with good size and good length. I think No. 33 (Leroy Harris III) is a problem and does a really nice job. Offensively, I think they run well outside. I think the quarterback keeps getting better and better week in and week out and is creating explosive plays for them. So, it's going to be a challenge."

QUOTABLE II:

KU coach Lance Leipold on the losing streak in the series: "We're well aware of the situation, the rivalry and our lack of success in a long time," Leipold said, while further explaining his position as, "I've always just tried to say you've got to line up the next week, and you've got to prepare (for all games)."
