How to watch Memphis’ road game against Tulane:

Memphis travels to New Orleans for a road game against Tulane Thursday night, as Charles Huff’s team looks to improve to 6-1 and gain bowl eligibility. Both teams had similar offseason and are both playing under a new head coach this season.

After Jon Sumrall took the Florida job, the Green Wave promoted Will Hall, who was the team’s passing game coordinator, to be the permanent head coach. Like Huff, Hall spent time as Southern Miss’ head coach, and Huff replaced him after a 1-6 year in 2024.

His team is off to a 2-3 start this season, but both wins were at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans. Tulane has actually won nine straight games at home, going back to when Memphis beat them in 2024.

The Green Wave’s offense is averaging only 18.4 points per game through five games, and they have a looming question at the quarterback position. After it was announced Zeon Chriss-Gremillion would be Tulane’s quarterback ahead of the season, he played only one half and hasn’t seen the field since.

The Green Wave turned to Kadin Semonza, who has started four straight games, and he has thrown for 804 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. While Semonza has been the starter, there wasn’t a starting quarterback listed on the weekly depth chart, and some fans and media members in New Orleans think true freshman Trace Johnson could get a look against the Tigers.

While the passing game has struggled, Tulane has recorded 764 yards on the ground, and three running backs have recorded 200 or more yards. Senior Maurice Turner leads the team with 277 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

Defensively, the Green Wave allow 22.6 points per game, and linebacker Dickson Agu leads the team with 46 tackles on the year. While the defense has done some nice things, they have struggled in the turnover category.

Tulane hasn’t recorded an interception this year, and the defense has recovered only one fumble.

What to watch in tonight’s game between Memphis and the Green Wave:

Memphis’ offense has looked great through the first five games of the season, and it will be interesting to see if that continues on the road against Tulane. The Green Wave rank No. 5 in the conference in passing defense, and Marcus Stokes could be challenged Friday night.

Stokes has thrown for 1,535 yards, 16 touchdowns and three interceptions, and he has gone three straight games without an interception.

While they have done a nice job against the pass, Tulane allows 218.6 rushing yards per game, and it feels like this could be another opportunity for the Memphis running backs to have a field day. The Tigers are rushing for 247 yards per game, and Jaylin Carter ranks in the top 15 in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, Memphis has struggled against the run at times, and it will be interesting to see if they can slow down Tulane’s run-game.

It’s also looking more likely that the Green Wave will start a true freshman, and the Tigers’ defensive line could make it uncomfortable for the young gunslinger.

Memphis is also looking to become bowl eligible for the 13th straight year with a win tonight. Obviously, the goals have changed for the Tigers over the last 12 years, but it’s still notable to keep the streak alive, especially under another new head coach.
