How to Watch: Michigan Football vs Oklahoma, other top games of Week 2

A Hail Mary was needed for the Michigan Wolverines to beat the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday in one of the most surprising and controversial finishes in college football in Week 1. But the question on the minds of just about every Michigan Wolverines fan this week is: “Was that just one bad game or a sign of things to come?“

Undisciplined and out-of-sync play on the offensive end sparks fears of a repeat of a 2025 season where Bryce Underwood and the offense never hit their stride enough for Michigan to compete. That will be put to the test against one of the best defenses in America on Saturday as the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners come to Ann Arbor for one of the most anticipated games of the weekend.

Michigan Wolverines vs No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners

  • Day: Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026
  • TV: FOX
  • Time: Noon ET
  • Location: Ann Arbor, MI
  • Weather: 74 degrees, partly cloudy
  • Odds: Oklahoma -5.5, O/U: 43.5

All eyes will be on Underwood, even with Heisman-hopeful John Mateer on the other side. The tape from his performance last week has been highly scrutinized, and head coach Kyle Whittingham made some not-so-confident comments about him. The team as a whole was far from perfect, but Underwood’s decision-making and inefficient play cost the team on numerous occasions.

Rewind 365 days ago, and the same could be said about Underwood making his first road start in Norman against a dominant Brent Venables-led defense. He was just 9-for-24 for 142 yards in a game where he didn’t take as much heat because of the situation.

That won’t be the case this year, and it’s not just because he’s a year older. It’s also the supporting cast he has around him. That’s highlighted by what appear to be star newcomers J.J. Buchanan and Savion Hiter, along with returners Andrew Marsh and Jordan Marshall, behind an improved offensive line. Michigan can no longer afford for its quarterback to be holding them back.

Michigan’s defense was the main reason it ended up beating Western Michigan. One thing that will translate for Jay Hill and the unit heading into this game is preparing for Mateer’s legs. The Wolverines held quarterback Broc Lowry and running back Jalen Buckley, two of the MAC’s premier rushers, to only 2.4 yards per carry on 34 combined attempts.

They’ll face an upgrade this weekend in Mateer and a running back-by-committee situation. Mateer ran the ball 19 times against Michigan last season for 74 yards, constantly keeping the Oklahoma offense on the field. If the Wolverines can slow him down, they should have a solid chance of containing the Sooners’ offense.

Heading into last Saturday, Michigan was favored by 2.5 points. The near-loss to Western Michigan swung the spread all the way to 5.5 points in Oklahoma’s favor. That feels right from a narrative perspective, but the bettor in me sees a pretty significant opportunity knowing this is also the Sooners’ first road contest of the season. I’ll begrudgingly take Michigan +5.5 in hopes that Week 1 was a fluke and we see some improvement on Saturday.

Best Bet: Michigan +5.5
