The Fighting Irish defense has been the backbone of the team so far this season. It is allowing the fewest yards per game and second-fewest points per game in FBS. Notre Dame (4-0) is allowing just 199.3 yards per game, which is the only FBS team allowing fewer than 200. It is allowing 8.3 points per game, which is a huge adjustment to Notre Dame’s four-game average of 27.8 last season. The team has also allowed just one second half touchdown, which came with six seconds left in last weekend’s 49-10 rout at Purdue.
UNC (2-1) will be the biggest test for the Notre Dame defense so far this season. It has had two weeks to prepare for the Fighting Irish after a tough 28-20 loss to Clemson. Head coach Bill Belichick’s experience as a defensive savant could definitely come in handy and keep this game close.
Since 2008, Notre Dame has won 11 consecutive games against the Tar Heels. The most recent matchup came in 2022, when Notre Dame won 45-32 in Chapel Hill.
