Auburn held on to beat Baylor 17-16 in the AFLAC Kickoff Game in Atlanta last Saturday when the Tigers stopped a potential go-ahead two-point conversion with nine seconds remaining. Auburn never trailed and took a 17-10 lead with 3:26 to go when Byrum Brown ran for an 11-yard touchdown. Jeremiah Cobb added a rushing touchdown, finishing with 53 yards on 12 carries, while Brown finished 26-of-35 for 259 yards and three interceptions while running for 27 yards and a score on 21 attempts, taking five sacks.
Southern Miss erased an early 3-0 deficit and rolled to a 49-3 win over visiting FCS Alcorn State last Saturday. Steven Robinson picked up 123 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries while Jamarice Wilder added 90 yards and two scores on 14 attempts. Ethan Hampton threw for 180 yards and a touchdown while also tossing an interception, connecting with Mario Sanders for six catches, 94 yards and a TD. Kobi Albert notched three of the defense’s four interceptions.
The Tigers won each of their previous two meetings with the Golden Eagles, most recently in September 2018. Auburn finished 5-7 last season, including a 1-7 mark in Southeastern Conference action, while Southern Miss closed out a 7-6 season with four straight losses, including a New Orleans Bowl defeat at the hands of Western Kentucky.
