Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1 SEC) is less than 24 hours away from earning its first bid to the College Football Playoff just a week after falling to Texas (9-3, 6-2 SEC) 27-17 on Black Friday, as the Aggies did more than enough during the regular season to make the CFP, but will now play in the first-round instead of earning a bye in the quarterfinal round.
For Aggie fans, just making it to the CFP has been the goal all along, as many predictions had Texas A&M finishing 8-4 or worse. Still, thanks to starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s career year after throwing for 2,932 yards and 25 touchdowns, including 13 to transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, the Aggies won eleven consecutive games. They looked like the most complete team in the country.
However, the CFP Selection Committee apparently felt that losing to a ranked team on the road was enough to drop the Aggies four spots to No. 7 in last week’s rankings, and ahead of Sunday’s final rankings release, it looks like A&M will stay at No. 7 or move up one spot after Texas Tech blew out BYU 34-7 in the Big 12 Championship, combined with Alabama’s 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Title Game.
Either way, the Aggies are headed to the CFP, and that’s all that matters after finishing 8-5 last season with little hope heading into the offseason. For the Aggie fans who may have forgotten when the final CFP rankings will be revealed, here is everything you need to know.
