Washington State takes on the No. 17 Washington Huskies in the 118th meeting of the Apple Cup this Sunday afternoon on NBCSN and Peacock. Live coverage begins at 4:00 PM ET. This is the very first time that the two programs are meeting in their season openers. The Huskies lead the series 77-34-6, most recently defeating the Cougars 59-24 last season.
Washington State vs No. 17 Washington Game Preview:
The Washington Huskies look to build off last season's 9-4 campaign and
return to the college football playoffs for the first time since 2024.
The team has kept most of its starters, including junior QB Demond Williams Jr., who accounted for 3,676 total yards and 31 touchdowns last fall.
Williams Jr. returns as Seattle's starter after nearly entering the transfer portal.
"This team was not bought. This team was built. This team was built from 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds. We will retain the players we develop. We do not bring in mercenaries," said head coach Jedd Fisch during Washington’s Media Day.
Fisch enters his third year with the Huskies.
The Cougars enter the 2026 season with a first-year head coach, Kirby Moore, and a new starting quarterback in Caden Pinnick.
Moore comes to Washington State after spending the last three years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Missouri.
Pinnick, a redshirt sophomore, transferred from UC Davis. Last year, he threw for 3,206 yards and 32 touchdowns, against just 10 interceptions. He also ran for 437 yards and three touchdowns.
