West Virginia opened its season with a 31-24 victory over Coastal Carolina, building a 24-0 halftime advantage before holding off a second-half comeback. Head coach Jason Simpson has used both Julian Calvez and Tate Surber at quarterback, while running back Tommy Ansley leads the Skyhawks with 179 rushing yards and five touchdowns through two games. UT Martin was picked to win the OVC in the preseason, but West Virginia presents a major step up in competition for a program that is 2-31 against FBS opponents since 2006.
