Wisconsin hung with then-No. 4 Notre Dame for a half, trailing 13-10 at the break, before the Fighting Irish pulled away to hand the Badgers a 41-13 loss at Lambeau Field on Sunday night. Joseph Colton connected with Malachi Coleman for a game-tying 28-yard pass early in the second quarter for Wisconsin’s only TD. Colton finished 19-of-30 for 217 yards with a touchdown and an interception while Coleman hauled in four catches for 76 yards. Abu Sama led the ground game with 49 yards on 15 carries as the Badgers managed only 67 yards on 31 attempts.
Western Illinois trailed visiting Illinois State 17-0 after a quarter last Saturday night on the way to a 41-10 thumping. Quarterback Cason Carswell got the Leathernecks’ only touchdown on a three-yard run midway through the fourth quarter and finished 9-of-18 for 140 yards while splitting snaps with Kennedy McGill, who went 14-of-22 for 123 yards and threw an interception. Christian Anaya caught four passes for 78 yards while the run game was held to 52 yards.
The Badgers are 2-0 against the Leathernecks as the teams meet for the first time since 2014. Wisconsin finished 4-8 last season with a 2-7 mark in the Big Ten Conference while Western Illinois also comes off a 4-8 campaign.
