BATON ROUGE – LSU football has added more depth for the running back room.
UCF freshman tailback Stacy Gage has signed with LSU, the team announced over the weekend. Gage is the fourth running back Lane Kiffin and his coaching staff have brought in out of the transfer portal.
The Tigers have added Wisconsin freshman running back Dilin Jones, Utah freshman Raycine Guillory and Charlotte freshman Rod Gainey Jr. from the portal.
Gage rushed for 63 yards with a touchdown last season for the Knights.
Why Stacy Gage picked LSU football out of transfer portal
In his lone season in Orlando, Gage didn’t generate much playing time for himself. The 5-11, 210-pound running back entered the market looking for a fresh start.
Gage was a three-star running back coming out of high school but held offers from just about all of the big Power Four teams, including Ole Miss where Kiffin previously coached. So LSU’s new offensive staff are familiar with Gage and his talents as well as Gage has a connection with them.
How Stacy Gage fits with LSU football’s roster
This is clearly a development move for both LSU and Gage. Harlem Berry and Caden Durham are back for the Tigers so there’s very little playing time to be had this upcoming season at running back.
It’s also about competition and depth as LSU now has four freshmen tailbacks on the roster. How Gage performs among that group will determine where he stacks up on the depth chart.
LSU football transfer targets
- Missouri edge rusher Damon Wilson
- Colorado offensive lineman Jordan Seaton
When did transfer portal close?
The NCAA transfer portal window closed Jan. 16. Players are no longer permitted to enter their name in the portal. However, those whose name were already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
