BATON ROUGE — Just like the old adage goes, “you can never have too many wide receivers.”
That may not actually be a saying, but Lane Kiffin and LSU football could be subscribing to that line of thinking as it pertains to the transfer portal.
Florida transfer wide receiver Eugene Wilson III announced his commitment to the Tigers Wednesday morning, becoming the fourth transfer wide out to join LSU during this portal cycle. Hawai’i’s Jackson Harris, Old Dominion’s Tre Brown and Kansas State‘s Jayce Brown have all committed to play for LSU as well.
Wilson was a multi-year starter for the Gators and he amassed 107 receptions for 1,043 yards and 10 touchdowns across three seasons. He has two years of eligibility left.
Why WR Eugene Wilson III picked LSU football out of transfer portal
Florida has gone through a coaching change with former coach Billy Napier getting fired and Jon Sumrall from Tulane has now taken over the program. In the aftermath, former Gators quarterback D.J. Lagway and a few other offensive players have hit the portal, so there has been some uncertainty swirling around Florida.
Wilson appears to have wanted a fresh start elsewhere while also prioritizes playing in the SEC or at the very least, high caliber football. LSU checked a lot of boxes for Wilson and he does for LSU as well.
How Eugene Wilson III will fit LSU football’s roster
We’ve discussed the holes that the Tigers have at wide receiver ad nauseum. But what Kiffin and his offensive coaching staff like about Wilson is his experience and production in the SEC under the bright lights, something that the other transfer wide outs can’t bring to the fold.
Wilson has burned both LSU and Kiffin in the past when they’ve been on opposing sidelines as him. Two years ago, he put up six catches for 63 yards and a touchdown in Florida’s upset win over LSU in Gainesville.
LSU football transfer targets

- Washington quarterback Demond Williams
- Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
- North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
- California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
- McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis
- UAB wide receiver Iverson Hooks
When does transfer portal close?
The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
