Hundreds of NFL players want to participate in 2028 LA Olympics flag football tournament

The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles are now less than two full years away. We already have a pretty good idea what our men’s and women’s basketball teams will look like, but it’s anyone’s guess who will represent the United States on the Olympic flag football field.

On Thursday the NFL Senior Vice President of Global Flag Football, Brian Flinn, revealed that more than 200 NFL players have expressed interest. According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL will “allow only one player per team to be on loan to the Olympic effort,” which is a funny way to put it.

The thing is, there’s no guarantee any or all of the NFL volunteers will actually participate. It looks like the roster size is only 10 players and the NFL is actually investing in a new professional flag football league as we speak. So maybe the coach will prefer flag football players for the flag football tournament? We saw what it looked like when an actual flag football team took on a bunch of football players who were thrown together to play flag football.

Then there’s the question of whether we even need to send NFL players. One of the other teams who will participate will be Italy who qualified for the event by finishing second in the 2026 IFAF Men’s Flag Football World Championship behind Team USA. Sean Stellato, Tommy DeVito’s agent, is currently trying to make the Italian flag football team with hopes of participating in the 2028 Olympics. Stellato will turn 50 a couple months before the Olympics.

No offense to Stellato who has legit athletic credentials, but think about that for a second. On one side you have an agent and on the other you have Justin Jefferson? We may be overthinking this.

America is the best at tackle football. We will never be able to prove it through international competition because there isn’t any, but they get to play for the Lombardi Trophy in the Super Bowl of sports championships, the Super Bowl. Maybe playing in the NFL should be enough to make you give up your Olympic dreams.
