The Huntingtown Hurricanes are headed back to the MPSSAA Class 2A Football State Championship Game for a third year straight after defeating Wicomico 50-20 at home in the state semifinals.
Huntingtown (10-2) got off to a quick start in its Friday night battle with Wi-Hi (10-3), taking a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Two rushing touchdowns by Joshua Walter and an interception returned for a touchdown by Xavier Jones put the visiting Wi-Hi team down by three touchdowns early.
Wi-Hi’s defense would attempt to get them back into the game, as Kelando Davis returned a fumble for a touchdown to make it 20-7. The Wi-Hi defense would then grab an interception, and running back Kevin Thomas scored on the ensuing drive to make it 20-14, shrinking Huntingtown’s lead. But Huntingtown would respond, scoring another touchdown courtesy of Gabriel Copeland and then making a field goal to give them a 29-14 lead at halftime.
Copeland would score again coming out of halftime, extending Huntingtown’s lead to 36-14. And from there, the Hurricanes remained in control and in the lead for the rest of the game, punching their ticket to their third consecutive Class 2A State Championship Game.
For Wi-Hi, the loss ends a successful season for the Bayside South squad, as they made it to the state semifinals for the first time since 2002.
