It was not a banner day for the Hurricanes on the recruiting trail on Friday.
Miami missed out on two top prospects within an hour of each other, including one local star that could have been a centerpiece of UM’s 2027 class.
First, four-star defensive lineman David Folorunsho opted for Notre Dame, picking the Fighting Irish over Miami, Georgia and Michigan, among others. Then five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews committed to Texas A&M, choosing the Aggies over the Hurricanes, Georgia and LSU.
Matthews, who is listed at 6-foot-5.5 and 300 pounds, is the bigger loss of the two. The top prospect plays for Fort Lauderdale powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas. He is listed as the No. 1 offensive tackle and No. 5 player in the 2027 class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
Matthews, a Sun Sentinel All-County first-team pick last year, is an Under Armour All-American and has been a key part for the Raiders’ last two state championship teams.
Matthews “projects as a multi-year starter for a College Football Playoff contender with early-round of the NFL Draft upside,” according to his 247Sports scouting report.
Miami currently has two offensive linemen in its 2027 class: four-star Sean Tatum and three-star Tyler Ford.
Folorunsho, a Chicago native, is also a top prospect. He is the No. 3 interior defensive lineman and No. 43 player in the class.
Folorunsho, who is listed at 6-3 and 280 pounds, racked up 55 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and five sacks last season.
UM has two defensive linemen committed in the 2027 class: four-star Ezekiel Ayangbile and three-star Josh Johnson.
