Legendary former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier made it clear this week that he never dropped a quote that a former Miami Hurricanes player claims was said 25 years ago.

Legendary former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier had to get something off his chest this week.

25 years ago, the Gators lost to the Miami Hurricanes 37-20 in the Sugar Bowl just days after a fight broke out between the two teams on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

After the game, Hurricanes tight end Jeremy Shockey claimed that Spurrier told him that Florida got their “asses kicked” on the field and off the field by Miami that week.

Spurrier, though, vehemently denies that he ever said such a thing.

“They asked Shockey in an interview he said, ‘Well, like Coach Spurrier said, we (Florida) got our ass kicked off the field, and then we got our ass kicked on the field,'” said Spurrier on Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “Well, I didn’t say that. That’s just a freaking lie… Shockey was just mouthing off and lying about something that I certainly didn’t say. And I said if I ever have a chance to — I’ve got my little microphone right here — I’ll let people know I’m not that stupid to say that we got our ass kicked, because we didn’t.”

I’ve been watching Spurrier talk for years, even when he’s mad, he’s still pretty calm. But in that moment where he brings up Shockey’s quote, you can hear in his voice that it still annoys him to this day that the former Miami tight end made that comment.

This isn’t the first time that Spurrier has addressed Shockey’s comment, but it might be the most passionate denial that he’s offered.
