Illinois high school football: Peoria-area highlights, scores, everything to know from IHSA Week 2

Week 2 of the Illinois high school football season has arrived, and it includes a big game on the field in the Big 12 Conference.

Notre Dame tries to recover from an opening night loss, while Richwoods tries to prove its opening night upset of Peoria High was no accident.

The Irish and the Knights are battling it out at Richwoods. Notre Dame has won 12 of their last 13 meetings.

A season finale?

Sherrard will play a Week 2 game against Orion on Friday, Aug. 28. That will be a season finale, as the program forfeits the rest of its 2026 varsity schedule after that and shifts to a JV schedule the rest of the year.

Published reports indicated that after a meeting with coaches, players, and parents, the decision was made by the school district to scrap the remainder of the varsity season as the roster was comprised of just 30 players, with 13 of them being juniors and seniors.

The decision was made following a 47-0 loss to Newman Central Catholic (IL), a game in which Sherrard was missing numerous players due to mononucleosis. Many of the players who came down with the viral infection were starters and are expected to be out for several weeks, according to WRMJ.

Sherrard is just 10-38 on the field since 2020.

The decision has left some Peoria area teams looking for opponents to replace Sherrard on its schedule.

Among the teams impacted are Kewanee (Week 4), Princeton (Week 5), Hall/Putnam County (Week 6), Monmouth-Roseville (Week 7).
