Mayor Darren Bryant was attending a resident’s birthday celebration when gunfire erupted shortly after midnight.

Robbins, Ill., Mayor Darren Bryant was grazed by a bullet during a shooting at a local bar and restaurant that left the alleged gunman dead. Bryant and a DJ were treated for injuries after ricocheting bullets struck them during the incident.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Marquelle Rose of Chicago entered Harold’s Chicken and Ice Bar near South Claire Boulevard in Robbins shortly after midnight and opened fire at an intended target near the entrance. A security guard working at the establishment returned fire, striking Rose. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at about 1 a.m. from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

The mayor and the DJ working that night were both grazed by ricocheting bullets as people inside the establishment scrambled for safety. Both were taken to a hospital and treated for their injuries, as reported by The Chicago Tribune.

Robbins spokesperson Sean Howard said Bryant had been at the restaurant for a senior resident’s birthday celebration. He was reportedly speaking with patrons and waiting for food when the gunfire began.

“The DJ and the mayor were, like many others, trying to seek cover and safety at that point, and were grazed,” Howard said.

Although Darren Bryant was shaken by the incident, Howard said the mayor’s immediate concern was for the others who were inside the facility. “It’s the first time he’s ever experienced something in his life like that,” Howard said. The shooting has prompted an investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Officials have not released details about the intended target.

Harold’s Chicken and Ice Bar will remain closed while Robbins police complete their investigation.Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
